Prussian blue and burnt umber balance cold and warm colors in the mixture.

To make the darkest mixture (1) for the dead layer: two parts of black, one part of burnt umber, about one eighth of Prussian blue.

To make the lightest mixture (7) for the dead layer: take white, and decrease the intensity of the open white by adding a little bit of the darkest mixture.

Then we make a middle tone (3) between the lightest and the darkest mixtures. The approximate proportion is two parts of the darkest mix, and one part of the lightest mix. The middle tone mixture should be colored by adding yellow ocher, burnt umber and Prussian blue. The proportion depends on whether you want to make it bluer, greener, or browner.

Three more intermediate tones (4,5,6) are mixed between lightest mix and middle tone.

One more intermediate tone (2) should also be made between the middle tone and darkest mixtures.
